Writer: Biro Humas Setda Prov Bal

For Balinese people, Ngaben is not a strange word, because that ceremony is held almost everyday in Bali. Ngaben is cremation ceremony in Bali, Indonesia. Ngaben ceremony is a ritual which aims to send the corpse to the next level of live. In this ceremony, that corpse is placed like someone who is sleeping. The families left assume that decendent people is still sleeping. On the ceremony, there is no tears, because they assume the corpse only leave for a few moment and will reincarnate or will find the final resting called Moksha. Moksha also means the freedom of souls from the reincarnation as well as from wheel of death. Ngaben ceremony also symbolizes to sanctify the decedent’s soul.
In Hindu religion, human body consists of smooth body (soul) and rough body (the corpse). That rouge body is formed by five unsures called Panca Maha Bhuta. These five unsure consist of pertiwi (land), teja (fire), apah (water), and akasa (vacuum). These five unsures unite and then forme a psychal that moved by the soul. If someone pass away, only rough body which deads, the soul still exist. Furthermore, to sanctify the soul, Ngaben ceremony is really needed to separate the soul and the rough body.
There are many opinions referring to origine of Ngaben’s word. Some opinion said Ngaben comes from Beya word means Stock. Others opinion said it comes from Ngabu word means ash. Moreover, there is an opinion said that Ngaben comes from Ngapen word means sanctification with a fire. In Hindou belief, God Brahwa or God of Creator known as God of Fire. Furthermore, the ceremony is also considered as an effort to burn the dirt that forms a rough body as well as to restore the soul into the Creator.
For Balinese people, Ngaben is a pride moment, because through holding that ceremony, they have carried on their duty as a member of family. Therefore, the ceremony is always organized even needs a high cost. Balinese people also believe the tears will hamper the journey of soul to achieve Nirvana. The best day to organize the ceremony will be discussed with the elders or someone who is experts. The corpse will be placed into a chest. The cest will be entered into a sarcophagus which shaped an Ox, Lyon or others animals. Starting from house to the cemetery, the chest is carried using Bade and lifted by thousands villagers.
The peak of ceremony is burning all structures, including Ox and others. Ngaben ceremony in Bali sometimes organizes with festive and needs a lot of cost. Furthermoe, not few people organize Ngaben ceremony in long time interval after the death. Currently, Hindou people in Bali organizes Ngaben ceremony massively that aims to economize the cost. So the decendant corpse is buried for a moment while waiting the enough cost. Meanwhile, for a rich family, Ngaben could organize as soon as possible.
